Pincushions – sewing essentials

Published August 31, 2011 by enddo

I always adore pincushions. For those that sew, pincushions are essentials in their sewing toolbox. You can make tiny ones, big ones, various shapes, styles and colors, depending on fabric you have on hand.

For my pincushions, I use leftover  fabric scraps from projects I have worked on. They are fun to make and great as  gift to a friend who love to sew. Low cost easy to make and therapeutic, too, especially after a stressful day at work, making pincushion could give an instant gratification.

Indulgence

Over the past Easter holiday, we went on a trip out-of-town. Along the way, did some shopping   almost at any shopping venues, mall, outlet mall and flea market.

Normally I am a very careful shopper. I won’t buy thing on impulse. I have to find a thousand ways to justify my spending. Well, we have to pass Coach store at one of the prime outlet mall. The store just open that morning , the store was already crowded with eager buyers. I noticed ladies with several Coach handbags in their hands and some slung over their shoulders. Before I could even think the sales lady handed me a coupon with 50% and another 15% off anything in the store that day. I zoomed straight to the corner where there are a large concentration of ladies ogling at the arrays of the latest and sought after handbags, of all sizes, colors and designs. I was transfixed. I looked at my husband, he nodded o.k. I grabbed one small bag, supposedly the latest design. I don’t really like coach handbag, but this one is very appealing (price wise) and practical, lots of pockets. Sticker prices $248.00. Oops, no! I put it down. The sales lady said with coupon it was down 75% off the sticker price. Numbers raced through my head. How many hours do I have to work to prove this. Do I need this bag? I have a dozen or so handbags at home. My weakness are shoes and handbags.

Alright then, it wouldn’t hurt if I buy this one. I wouldn’t buy any more handbag this year. I was still undecided when my husband took the bag and walked to the cashier and paid for it. He said if I don’t act fast, the bag would be gone in a minute. I couldn’t believe what I saw that morning at that store. I heard one lady spent over $3,000. She said it was a bargain.

On the way home, I couldn’t help thinking . The cost of my handbag could give a  meal for a day for someone, somewhere.

try cake decorating class

One of my wish this year is to learn cake decorating. I’m not good at following recipes and instructions. When I bake cake, more often it turns out disastrous. I never decorate cake before. I don’t see any point in putting anything extra to any cake because it is  to be eaten, anyway. Well, this year I decided to give it a try. I have watched lot of cake decorating competitions on TV. I must admit the competitors are having a good time. so I’m going  to have a good time this evening. I’m on class 1, the basic class. I’m told the instructor is an experienced teacher. I hope to keep on track. The class is an outlet for me to unwind as well and be around people. My work confined me to a single room studio. The plus side, while working i have a full view of the beautiful scenery outside. Sometime  I make time to fill the bird feeder and scatter lettuce and other greens for the gopher turtles and rabbits before i start my day.

I have work ongoing. I’m working on my website. My business has another phase, we decided to have an online presence as well.
I’ll keep myself posted of my cake decorating class. Who knows, maybe I could build a Julia Child’s kitchen someday, as a replica of the one at Smithsonian, out of icing, sugar and water.

Outside kitty

We have this outside male cat, I named him Soucisson. He is lumpy, shaggy  and limping. He appeared at our backyard almost six years ago, probably dropped off by some people in the neighborhood. I offered him a bowl of food. That was it. He came to stay and became a permanent sight outside our screen room door. He ousted other strays that try to invade our backyard.

Several days ago, he did not come home. I was worried, in the past he disappeared a day or two but this time , it is five days. I was about to check the local animal shelter, glad I did not.  This morning, there he was waiting for food. He does not look good, scratches all over his face and his fur, dirty and matted.

This morning, Soucisson  looks much better. He is enjoying the morning sun. The weather has been cold for several days and today it is sunny and breezy.
